Social Entrepreneurship is a business approach that aims to generate profit while simultaneously creating sustainable solutions to social problems. Unlike traditional businesses that focus primarily on financial gain, social entrepreneurship places social impact at the center of its mission. Profit is important — but it is used as a tool to create long-term positive change in society.

Freshwater resources in Sri Lanka are limited. Rivers, reservoirs, and underground aquifers exist, but population growth and urbanization increase demand. Especially in the dry zone and urban outskirts, access to safe drinking water is low.
Water distribution systems are often outdated or poorly maintained. Frequent pipeline leakage, contamination, and irregular supply. Many remote villages and estate areas lack proper water networks, leading to inequality in access.
Lack of clean water forces people to use contaminated sources (bacteria, chemicals, heavy metals). Leads to health problems like kidney disease, diarrhea, dengue, and hepatitis. Children, elderly, and household workers are most vulnerable.
Water scarcity reduces household productivity, agriculture, and food supply. Schools, hospitals, and factories may face operational difficulties. Low-income families are often forced to spend extra money on bottled water or private water filters.
Climate change → droughts, changing rainfall patterns. Reservoirs and rivers drying up. Deforestation and watershed degradation reducing water availability.
Safe drinking water shortage is a social issue because it affects: 1. Basic human rights – access to safe water 2. Public health – risk of disease outbreaks 3. Economic well-being – added costs and lost productivity 4. Social equality – the gap between wealthy and poor communities
Youth in Sri Lanka should study social entrepreneurship because it empowers them to build their own futures, solve pressing social issues, strengthen the national economy, and create sustainable, meaningful change. It is not just a business model. It is a mindset of responsibility, innovation, and impact.
Social entrepreneurship promotes: Ethical business practices Environmental responsibility Community-centered decision-making It develops leaders who care not only about profit, but also about people and purpose.
As a developing nation like Sri Lanka, economic instability can occur periodically. Social enterprises are often: Self-sustaining Community-focused Less dependent on external aid This makes them more resilient during economic crises.
In Sri Lanka, employment opportunities are limited, and many young people depend heavily on government or private sector jobs. By studying social entrepreneurship, youth can: Start their own ventures Create employment for others Reduce dependency on traditional job markets
Sri Lanka faces several ongoing challenges, including: Unemployment Poverty Environmental pollution Rural underdevelopment Young people are naturally creative and innovative. Through social entrepreneurship, they can transform ideas into practical businesses that solve real community problems.
Many young Sri Lankans consider migration due to limited opportunities. However, social entrepreneurship enables them to: Build sustainable income sources within their own communities Add value to local resources Develop rural and regional economies This supports national growth while creating personal success.
